Golf: A Guide for the Amateur Golfer to Improve the Mental Game

Why do we love golf and keep coming back for more? As a Duffer, I certainly don't care about my score. A cheap source of balls is a must because the course keeps eating them. Competition? Bah, maybe in some weird form like closest to the hole wins a buck. Slice? Yes I'll take one in my drink at the 19th Hole thank you much.

Yet I truly love the game. I like being out in nature. I like the equipment. I like being out with my friends or fellow addicts. Most of all, as Tin Cup put it, I love to experience the "Tuning fork ringing in my loins". How can I do that again? How can I figure out how to repeat the good shot I just made? The answers are bundled into the concept of "Flow" or getting in the Zone. The Psychological concept of Flow has intriged me greatly for the last 15 years but I've only been playing for 5 of them. We love the game because we get totally absorbed in the activity (which I will explain in gory detail later). We can experience states of frustration but never boredom.

I will share key insights. It is my hope that these concepts become as valuable for you as they are for me.

The game creates great and interesting experiences. Come and share your experiences. I would like to see this site become not only a place to go for information and learning but to become a place to share with others in a forum for fellow Duffers. By the way, any amateur can be considered a Duffer (an endearing term not a derogatory term).
